What do you think about when you shower?
Do you shower everyday? I'm guessing the answer is yes. Usually every morning. And sometimes at night before you go to bed? After the gym, a long day at work or just because you want to. It's a time of the day when (unless you're in the throes of a new relationship, lucky things), we are completely alone. The bathroom door is locked. And no matter what time of day it is, is a time that we should savour. But do you ruin this opportunity for solitude and relaxation by overthinking? Worrying? Jumping to the imagined day ahead?
So now let me ask another question. Do you meditate everyday? Have you thought this should be something you ought to do but can never seem to find the time? If so, then perhaps incorporating meditation techniques into your everyday routine at a time when you're alone would be quite a good idea.
An everyday routine like showering.
Rather than sitting in a quiet place in the house or trying to set aside a specific 10-15 minutes to meditate, try to practice mindfulness techniques when you shower. Every single day. Here's how.
As soon as you step into the shower and feel the water drop onto the top of your head, take this as a signal to be completely in the shower at that time. No wandering thoughts. No worrying about the day ahead. No thinking about what to wear. No going through your to do list for work. And no wondering if you'll actually make it to the gym tonight.
Just feel the water. Smell the scents of your shower gel, scrub or soap. The lather of the shampoo as it builds up in your hair. And the feel of your skin as you wash away any thoughts you have. About anything.
Mindful showering is something that we hope helps everyone to begin their day feeling ready for the day ahead, or to wind down before bedtime. We live in a world where we are moving so fast that we never make time to stop. Not even slow down. But stop. We need a way to calm our over-excited brains. And to relax our mind.
Next time you take a shower, watch your thoughts. What do you think about? And try incorporating mindfulness showering into your daily routine.
