Mindful showering - escaping the noise

Have you heard of Jay Shetty? The bio on his website describes him as, "an award winning host, storyteller and viral content creator. Since launching his video channel in 2016, Jay’s viral wisdom videos have garnered over 4 billion views and gained over 20 million followers globally. This makes him one of the most viewed people on the internet internationally."


"After meeting a monk when he was 18, Jay started redefining success for himself. He now wanted a life of service, impact and passion as opposed to money, fame and power. After graduating with a 1st class BSc (Hons) Degree in Behavioral Science from Cass Business School, inspired to make a difference in the world, at 22 he went to live as a monk across India and Europe. He traded his suits for robes, shaved his head and lived out of a gym locker for 3 years."


Jay is now launching his new book, "Think Like a Monk", which perhaps couldn't be more well timed. And it's prompted us to think about how we can keep our cool and tame our thoughts in the current climate.


The noise we're all exposed to


We know how difficult it can be to maintain a rational mind, even during the most 'ordinary' of times. We're always bombarded with messages from so many different channels. It's almost like walking around in a maze without an exit. Everywhere you turn there's something to read, something to see or something being sold to us.


Sometimes it can feel like we're wandering around in a maze that has no escape from everything that's happening around us. Especially in testing times the likes of which we're experiencing at the moment.


For many, the crippling of the economy, fear of the unknown, wondering how this situation is going to develop, or how it's going to affect the future, are all within our daily thoughts. Much of what is going on just now is going to be a test of our mental strength and our ability to cope with not knowing what the future holds.


What can we do to help ourselves?


I have started meditating again, twice a day, to try to maintain a sense of presence and connectedness to the here and now. I'm watching my thoughts, trying not to allow negativity to take over or to catastrophise. I find that meditating helps that process.


When I'm in the shower, I am also using it as an opportunity to practice mindfulness which is something we value and want to become the norm for everyone. Taking that time in the morning, the evening or night time to focus on every little thing that you're doing at that precise moment in time. From the moment you open the door to the bathroom, to stepping inside the shower. This is an opportunity to calm thoughts. To monitor what your mind is doing and to completely detach from it.




As many of us are staying at home and finding we don't have the usual distractions from the external, we can try to use this an opportunity to 'be'. To sit with ourselves. To focus on the present day whilst acknowledging what we need to do to protect ourselves tomorrow.


The reality is, that we can speculate all we want about what might or might not happen. Today, nobody knows for certain. We are doing our best to maintain a positive mind and outlook and taking it one day at a time.
