Discovering more about Cradle to Cradle
I'm trying to think what I was doing fifteen years ago? I'd have been 25 (ish) trying to navigate life, love and the universe with a degree of immaturity that I was probably very unaware of. I would have been working full time, a few years into my marketing career and wondering where it would take me.
I'd always wanted to have my own business but finding what that would be wasn't going to come easy.
Fifteen years ago, the book "Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things", was published. "...encapsulating a journey of discovery about materials as biological or technical nutrients and their use periods and their evolution. They created a framework for quality assessment and innovation: the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Products Program." William McDonough and Dr. Michael Braungart started a revolution and it's one I'm happy to say I have finally discovered.
It's completely changed my approach to the design of my product. I knew during the summer that I wanted to work with a circular design model, however Cradle to Cradle elevates it further and provides a framework to work towards. I now have a goal to achieve Platinum certification one day (!) - so even better than gold standard.
The five certifiable criteria of material health, material reutilisation, renewable energy, water stewardship and social fairness combine to create products for the future that protect our planet and the people in from waste and poor treatment of resources.
It's made me realise the big problem with how we protect bathrooms when showering. The virgin polyester shower curtains that get mouldy and need to be washed, PEVA plastic shower curtains that are non-recyclable (at the moment) and also go mouldy. And the toughened glass shower screens with rubber seals that are not recyclable either. Retailers are littered, bathrooms are littered and our landfill and oceans are littered too. I have realised that by taking the time to develop a product that is C2C certified, we can make a nicer choice for our showers and for our planet.
Cradle to Cradle has given me the much needed direction that I was lacking at the start of this year. I cannot wait to keep learning even more about this amazing revolution that has been going on but is still in it's early stages.
